Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Picture
There are lots of opportunities to serve the community during tax season as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. You don't need to be a CPA or tax expert to help. VITA volunteers can help at local sites as greeters, preparers and reviewers. Volunteers can take advantage of in person review programs or the online training materials. Each preparer must pass the VITA exam each season.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $53,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.  In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

One of the East Valley locations at Landings Credit Union in Tempe is in need of experienced VITA volunteers to help oversee the ASU student volunteers.  They are open Saturdays during tax season and Wednesdays evenings in February. In addition, they do a special event in March the residents of Apache Trails, a 100 unit residential community for the deaf.  If you are interested in helping this location, please contact Diane Bennett, Tempe Financial Stability Initiative - Tempe Community Council at 602-291-2202.

Below are additional contacts for VITA sites through local cities and United Way offices.
